Aim Of Ptl
- Principle aim of patrolling concerns the acquisition and denial of info regarding the en and trn including obstacles.
- In CI ops, Ptls may be tasked to dominate an area, seek combat with insurgents and be given seek and destroy msn.
- In CI ops, ptls are involved in area familiarization, gain topo info, provide Sy to VAs, dom AOR, prevent insurgent activities and maintain relentless pressure on hostiles

Str and Composition of Recce Ptl
(a) The primary aim of a recce patrol is to gain info and to convey it to the cdr in time to be of value.
(b) The actions of a recce patrol do not necessity depend on the actions of the unit from which the ptl is sent out and it has no protective responsibilities.
Tasks of Recce Ptl - 4
- To gain and confirm info about the en:
(a) En’s disposn and extent of his def layout
(b) Loc of A/tk and auto wpns
(c) Gaps in def if any.
(d) En’s iden, intentions, ptling habits and activity in the rear. - Obtain and confirm topo info including water obstl.
- Obtain details about minefds, wire obstl, a/tk obst and other artificial obsts.
- Obtain info about loc of en svl devices.
Protective Patrol
Deployed only as far ahead as within the range of own arty.
Tasks of PP
- Dominate “No man’s land”
- Watch and cover likely en appchs.
- Cover dead grnd both in front and between def localities and areas.
- Establish obsn over minefds and other obsts.
- Protect the flank and/or establish link with neighboring units/fmn.
- Provide EW about en str, mov and appchs.
- To depict a false front.

- Both Fighting & Recee type
- Incl TBP,SBP, Shadow Ptl, THT or Raids

Patrol Base …Area of tac imp close to the en but not under imdt obsn or dom, strong and capable of defending itself.
Why is it necce?
- When the ‘No Man’s Land’ is wide or area of ptl is large.
- When two or more ptls are reqd to operate in a restd area.
- When there is danger of small isolated ptls suffering serious interference from the en
- Subsequently to use it as firm base for attack.
Shadow Patrol,,,Small body of men suitably grouped to follow en ptls closely and moving body of en tps to gain early info as well as direct arty fire on en.
It provides:-
a. Psy feeling of superiority over the en.
b. Info of en ptls, leading to successful ambushes and eff protective patrolling.
c. Detection of en plan, entailing infil or an enveloping move..
d. Ew of any move such as en move to assy a or fup.
