PT.2 NOTES Flashcards
what are the 2 classifications of matter?
Pure substances and Mixtures
what are pure subtances?
are made of only one kind of substance and are chemically bonded
what are mixtures?
made of two or more different kind of pure substances physically combined
types of pure substances
elements
compounds
what is an element?
made of only one kind of atom
what are the types of element?
non-metals
metals
metalloids
what is a compound?
made of two or more different kinds of atoms that are chemically bonded.
what are the types of compounds?
ionic
covalent
metallic
define covalent
- components are both anion
- electrons are shared within the bond
define ionic
composed of anion and cation group
define metallic
- components are both metals
- electrons are stored in a “sea of electrons”
what is mixture?
made of two or more different kinds of pure substances physically combined
what is homogenous mixture?
- Mixtures wherein only one phase is discernible
- The mixture looks the same throughout
- You cannot see individual particles
- Also called solutions
What is heterogenous
- Different parts are not evenly mixed
- You can easily see and distinguish the individual component
types of heterogenous mixture
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Colloids
Suspensions
