Q

True or False: The flexion synergy dominates in the leg and the extension synergy dominates in the arm

Q

Jen has a CMSA score of 5 in her arm, what does this score indicate?

A

score 5: Relative independence from basic synergy. Synergy patterns can be reversed even if the movement occurs in the stronger synergy first.

Q

Marc has a CMSA score of 3 in his R leg, what does this indicate?

A

Score 3: Synergistic movements (or components) can be elicited voluntarily.

Q

What are the stronger synergies that occur in the upper extremity?

A

Flexor synergies**
- elbow flexion

Extensor synergy
- shoulder adduction & internal rotation

6
Q

Why are shoulder abduction, ext rotation and elbow extension synergies weak?

A

because of how strong the elbow flexor, shoulder adduction & int rotation synergies are

Q

How can the pt progress to the next stage?

A

being able to perform 2/3 tasks - if this is not achievable, test at lower stage

Q

Name the Stages of Motor Recovery

A
  1. Flaccid paralysis is present
  2. No voluntary movement but movement can be facilitated or occurs as an associated reaction. (Please note: may also have minimal voluntary movement in stage 2).
  3. Synergistic movements (or components) can be elicited voluntarily.
  4. Simple movements are possible outside of synergy. Synergy patterns can be reversed if movement occurs in the weaker synergy first.
  5. Relative independence from basic synergy. Synergy patterns can be reversed even if the movement occurs in the stronger synergy first.
  6. Coordination and movement are near normal.
  7. Normal
