What are two paralinguistic features of speech? Provide an example of how these features affect communication? (2)

A

Vocal intensity (loudness), and Prosody (fluency, rhythm, stress).

Vocal intensity affects communication because if you’re too loud or too quiet it could be hard to keep up in a conversation because it could either be overwhelming or you could miss a detail.
Prosody affects communication because it can be hard to understand the person. (too fast or hard to follow)

Appropriate:
Eye gaze: keeping your attention on the speaker and not on your phone or such.
Physical proximity: being a good distance from the person speaking

Inappropriate:
Physical contact: Hugging a person for a long time.
Facial expressions: Laughing during a serious conversation
