Psychotic disorder
Psychosis causes a loss of contact with reality, so may become more and more isolated and withdrawn. Psychosis is any disorder that causes a person to have hallucinations leading to confusion and disorientation.
(Appreciate there are different forms of a particular illness)
Treatment
Psychosis are treatable with drug therapies and can help people lead a more normal life.
Schizophrenia
characterised by… profound thought disturbance
GENERAL - INTRO
Loss of contact with reality.
Lead to become more withdraw and isolate oneself.
Lose sense of what is really happening in their life, become more confused and disorientated.
Thought processes disconnected and the individual loses grip with reality.
Evidence of a link of substance abuse and increase in psychotic illness.
Schizophrenia is characterised by profound thought disturbance, and is a psychotic disorder.
Positive symptoms
In those with schizophrenia but not normal.
eg. Halluncinations, Delusions
Hallucinations
Individual hears or feels something that isn’t there. e
Schizophrenia - hearing voices. May answer these, have conversations.
Delusion
Particular kind of unusual belief.
Paranoid delusions - unreasonable eg. unfaithful partner.
Delusions of reference - see special meanings.
Thought disorder
Muddled thought
Feelings of being controlled
Feeling that someone is taking the thoughts out of their head and trying to take control over them.
Negative symptoms
In normal people but not those with schizophrenia.
eg. losing emotional responses and lack of motivation.
LESS OBVIOUS.
Result in social isolation.
Apathy
Can’t be bothered to communicate with others.
Flat effect
General lack of emotion.
DSM
Must meet 3 diagnostic criteria

Disorganised speech/ behaviour
Negative symptoms
2, 3, 4
2 = Social or occupational dysfunction 3 = 6 month duration 4 = no other explanation
