Affective disorder
Major disturbance of emotions is predominant which affects mood eg. depression/bi-polar.
Types
Characterised: dramatic changes in mood including manic or depressive episodes. DSM V & ICD 10.
1: Major depressive disorder
- one or more major depressive episodes eg. at least 2 weeks depressed mood
2: Dysthymic disorder
- at least 2 years of depressed mood for more days than not
3: Bipolar I disorder
- one or more manic episodes, usually accompanied by Major Depressive Episodes
4: Bipolar II Disorder
- one or more major depressive episodes accompanied by at least one hypomanic episode
Depression
Feelings of despondency and dejection.
Present on a continuum.
May present with irritability rather than sadness, particularly teenagers.
DSM classification of Major Depressive Disorder
Insomnia most nights. Fidgeting or lethargy. Tiredness. Feelings of guilt or worthlessness. Inability to concentrate. Recurrent thoughts of death.
DSM/ICD
Both include classification on sleep eg. DSM- insomnia most nights, ICD - disturbed sleep.
Differences ICD includes loss of appetite as common symptom.
