Psychotherapy Modalities Flashcards
What is dialectal behavior therapy?
Dialectal behavior therapy is a form of psychological counseling in which patients are directed to change dysfunctional behavior patterns within a context of acceptance and compassion. It is used principally to manage personality disorders.
What is motivation interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is client-centered psychotherapy in which patients are encouraged to explore the discrepancies between what they hope to attain in their lives an dhow they currently live and behave. The therapist uses empathy while helping patients explore how change may positively affect their lives. Patients’ natural resistance to change is accepted as normal and natural. Autonomy is fostered so that changes in speech and behavior are developed by the patient, not by the therapist. The technique is used in a variety of setting, including alcohol and drug rehabilitation.
What is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)?
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the administration of an electric current to the brain to produce convulsions for treatment of drug-resistant or extremely severe psychiatric disorders (such as major depression, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia).
