Psychosis Flashcards
What is the functional anatomy of the mesolimbic-dopaminergic system?
The function of the mesolimbic-dopaminergic system, particularly the projection from the ventral regimental area (VTA) to the nucleus accumbens, has been strongly implicated in goal-orientated (motivated) behaviors, in addition to reward, attention, and pharmacologically induced locomotion.
What is the functional anatomy of the mesocortical-dopaminergic pathway?
The mesocortical pathway is characterized by dopaminergic projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to cortical regions such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC), orbitofrontal cortex, and anterior cingulate gyrus. The mesocortical pathway is thought to mediate the cognitive aspect of drug experience, craving, altered executive function, and loss of control over compulsive drug use.
