People w/ depression stop engaging in activities that they find rewarding. This therapy helps people identify which behaviors they value and re-engage in these
Cognitive aspects of CBT
Focuses on a person’s thoughts, beliefs, and how they influence mood / action. Aims to change person’s thinking to be more adaptive / healthy.
Behavioral aspects of CBT
Focuses on person’s actions and aims to change unhealthy behavior patterns.
CBT for depression
Useful for minor / moderate depression. Restructure negative thought pattern. May help px recognize things that are contributing to depression and change these thoughts / behaviors
CBT for anxiety
Aim to help person develop more adaptive response to fear. Give tools to cope w/ fear / traumatic memories. Involved graded exposure therapy.
CBT for bipolar
Used as adjunct to medication. Med may help stabilize mood so px is receptive to therapy. Learn how to recognize when a mood shift is about to occur. Helps px stick to treatment plan.
CBT for schizophrenia
Usually need med first. Helps px learn more adaptive / realistic interpretations of events. Learn coping mechanisms to deal w/ voices / hallucinations. Learn how to identify triggers to episodes. Learn social, daily functioning, and problem-solving skills
Interpersonal psychotherapy
- One-on-one therapy used to treat depression or dysthymia (more persistent but less severe form of depression).
- Good for people who have disrupted relationships and role transitions (how relationships are effected when our roles in life change).
- Learn how to express emotions in a healthy way
Psychodynamic therapy
Based on early aspects of relationships and how they impact current parts of relationships. Helps pxs identify / explore how their unconscious emotions and motivations can influence their behavior
Dialectical behavioral therapy
- Developed to work for people w/ suicidal ideation. Now used in people w/ borderline personality disorder. Class-based and individual therapy. Requires lots of time.
- Therapist validates the px’s feelings / emotions.
- Reduces suicide attempts by 50%
