What is the theory behind CBT? What is therefore the aim?
Considers problems as interactions between thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical responses to environmental situations
Aim is to change patient’s pattern of thinking and use behavioural techniques to facilitate this change
What are the 3 CBT principles?
Cognitive principle - interpretation of events rather than events themselves are crucial
Behavioural principle - what we do has a powerful influence on thoughts and emotions
Continuum principle - mental health problems are exaggerations of normal processes
What psychosocial intervention is specifically recommended for borderline PD?
Dialectical behavioural therapy DBT
What psychosocial intervention is specifically recommended for PTSD?
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing EMDR
What PSI may be useful in anorexia nervosa?
Family therapy
When might psychotherapy be helpful in schizophrenia and BPAD?
Family psychoeducation esp for families with high EE
What is MBT and what is it used for? How is it applied?
Mentalisation Based Therapy MBT, a form of psychoanalytical psychotherapy
Used for borderline PD - reduces self harm, suicide, admissions and improves functioning and symptoms
Used as outpatient or in day service over 18m
What is interpersonal therapy?
IPT - psychoanalytical psychotherapy useful sometimes in depression, bulimia etc. As a brief therapy
What psychoanalytical psychotherapy may be useful in BPAD?
Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy IPSRT - a modified form of IPT
