    - Wider scope of possibilities than any other life stage for western cultures
    - Lots of variability; difficult to predict activities
  2. Distinct state of mind
    - Not quite adult, not quite adolescence
    - Adult responsibilities include independent decision making, responsibility for oneself, and financial independence
