important to discuss, may need to refer teen/parent to seek additional resources
Common concerns from teens
unable to trust body d/t altered motor and sensory processes, bowel and bladder function
Injury and reliance on others can disrupt teenagers feeling of control through privacy and independence
Psychosocial aspects
assist with child’s ability to verbally process injury and rehab–may need social worked or psychologist or psychiatrist
Monitor for depression, risk taking behaviors, and substance abuse
Adjustment to SCI occurs over several years
PT should facilitate active participation and acquisition of skills to facilitate adjustment to SCI
Should provide edu to both parent and child
