What can delirium be caused by?
Acute brain failure
Clouding of consciousness
Attention defecit
Alcohol
Encephalopathy, injury stroke etc. (more long term than delirium, can progress into dementia etc)
Examples of Mania depression leading to psychotic disorders?
Puerperal psychosis
Schizoaffective psychosis
What else can cause ‘madness’?
Drugs - Cocaine, Sterioids, Anticholinerhics
Metabolic - Ca2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Vit B12
Endocrine - Thyroid cushing’s, Addison’s
Infections - Encephalitis, Syphillis
What are the common symptoms for Pyshosis?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Thought disorder
Many underlying causes leading to ‘reality failiure’

Results of efforts to make sense of perplexity
What are the positive symptoms for schizophrenia?
adding to experience
Hallucinations Delusions Persecutory/Grandiose - Delusional perceptions - Delusions of control - Thought delusions or interference
What are the negative symptoms for schizophrenia?
taking away from life
Anhedonia
Apathy
Social withdrawal
Blunted mood
What category of symptoms to thought disorder, disorganised speech/behaviour and inappropriate affect come in?
Disorganised symptoms
What is the genetic component of schizophrenia?
80% of cases due to heritability
more than 200 genes can be involved, epigenetic causes are the most common
genes tend to be linked to neurodevelopment and dopamine 2 receptor functions.
What can be seen in schizophrenic px PET scan?
Striatal dopamine
