mental disorder in which the thought, affective response or ability to recognize reality, and the ability to relate and communicate with others, are sufficiently impaired to interfere grossly with the ability to deal with reality
what are some characteristic traits of psychosis
hallucinations, disorders of thought and form of thought, lack of insight
what are some classes of psychosis
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder
what are the symptoms of psychosis
hallucinations, delusions, ideas of reference, formal thought disorder, thought interference, passivity phenomenon, loss of insight

schizophrenia
define delirium
acute transient disturbance from the persons normal cognitive function lasting for upto 6 months
what are the symptoms of delirium
clouding of consiousness, worse at night, impaired conc and memory, visual hallucinations, persicutory delusions and psychomotor disturbance
irritability and insomnia
what are the symptoms seen in depressive psychosis
mood congruent symptoms, delusions of worthlessness, guilt, Cottard’s syndrome, 2nd person auditory hallucinations
what is Cottard’s syndrome
belief onself has already died and is waiting for the body to catch up
what are the symptoms of manic psychosis
mood congruent psychosis symptoms, delusions of grandeur, flight of ideas, 2nd person hallucinations
what are the symptoms of schozophrenia
at least one of the following
thought echo, withdrawal, insertion or broadcasting
delusions of control, influence or passivity referring to body or limb movements
hallucinatory voices giving running commentary on patients behaviour
persistent delusions
describe persistent delusion disorder
a paranoid psychosis in which systematised fixed delusions are the main or only feature
define schizotypal disorder
a paranoid psychosis where there is eccentric behaviour and abnormality of thinking and affect resembling those seen in schizophrenia
what are the symptoms of schizotypal disorder
no definite/characteristic schizophrenic anomalies occur at any time
cold/inappropriate affect, anhedonia
odd/eccentric behaviour, social withdrawal
auditory or other delusions occuring without external provocation
define acute and transient psychotic disorder
schizophrenic like symptoms lasting less than a month
