What is Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare, but life-threatening, idiosyncratic reaction to neuroleptic medications that is characterized by fever, muscular rigidity, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction. NMS often occurs shortly after the initiation of neuroleptic treatment, or after dose increases
What are the clinical presentation of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Severe muscular rigidity
Hyperthermia (temperature >38°C)
Autonomic instability
Changes in the level of consciousness
Other Sx: Diaphoresis, Pallor, Dysphagia, Dyspnea, Tremor, Incontinence, Tachycardia, Shuffling gait, Psychomotor
Management of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Discontinue treatment
Supportive treatment=Treat symptoms
What are the potential complications of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Seizures
Cardiovascular arrhythmia
Renal failure
Hepatic failure
Respiratory failure
Aspiration pneumonia
DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)
Decompensation of psychiatric disease following withdrawal of neurotics
Pulmonary embolism and DVT
