Psychopharmacology Flashcards
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Connects the brain and skeletal muscles to produce voluntary movements and is responsible for processing senses from external stimuli
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Links the brain with internal organs to produce unconscious states
What does the SNS do?
Uses alpha and beta receptors to activate fight or flight response
What does the PNS do?
Uses muscarinic/cholinergic and nicotinic receptors to activate rest and digest response
What does dopamine do?
Controls emotion, reward, motivation, executive function, and motor control
What does serotonin do?
Controls mood, sleep, libido and temperature regulation
What does noradrenaline do?
Stimulates alpha and beta receptors to turn on SNS for fight or flight response
What does glutamate do?
Excitatory neurotransmitter. High levels are linked with psychosis, anxiety and stimulant abuse
What does GABA do?
Inhibitory/calming neurotransmitter. Slows overexcited cells, low levels linked to anxiety
What does acetylcholine do?
Stimulates muscarinic receptors that turn on the PNS for rest and digest response
