MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) symptoms
At least 1 of:
- depressed mood
- lack of interest in pleasure or activities
- weight loss
- suicidal ideation
- sleep problems
- fatigue
Manic episode symptoms
- abnormally + persistently elevated or irritable mood + abnormal goal directed activity for 1 week
- during mood elevation at least 3 of below symptoms (4 if only irritable):
- Increased self esteem
- decreased need for sleep
- talkative
- distractible
- increase in goal directed behavior
MDD vs. dysthymia
dysthymia lasts longer (2 years) but sometimes with less symptoms. Can be diagnosed with MDD after 2 weeks with symptoms
Bipolar Type 1 vs. Type 2
(BP-1 = mania) (BP-2 = hypomania)
BP-1 is more severe mood episodes from mania to depression
BP-2 is milder form of mood elevation w/ hypomania
Hypomania vs. Mania
Hypomania is a milder form of mania
Mania has social occupation impairment
Mania lasts longer (7 days) Hypomania (4 days)
Monoamine theory of depression
name neurotransmitters plus what happens to receptors
depleted serotonin (important in depression), dopamine, and norepinephrine leads to profound depression/suicidal ideation - receptors down regulate (fewer in number) as the neurotransmitters increase over time

- insomnia is most common sleep problem in depression
- less deep sleep (stage 3 and 4)
- early entry into REM sleep
- Increased REM total and eye movements

Schizoaffective vs. Schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective is symptoms of schizophrenia with major mood episode
- symptoms of schizophrenia present for at least 2 weeks w/o prominent mood symptoms
Schizoaffective vs. Mood disorder w/ psychotic features
- when mood improves in mood disorder, psychotic symptoms disappear
- in schizoaffective disorder, psychotic symptoms remain when mood is gone
