Psychopathology Flashcards
What are the four different definitions of abnormality?
1) Deviation from social norms
2) Statistical infrequency
3) Failure to function adequately
4) Deviation from ideal mental health
How is behaviour considered abnormal using statstical infrequency.
statistically rare characteristics and behaviours not exhibited by many people. the more the figure deviates from average, the more rare and stastically infrequent.
What is an example of a stastically infrequent behaviour?
measuring intelligence. majority of the populations IQ would be clustered around average, 85 - 100. normal distribution.
those who score below 70% are unusual or abnormal. - able to be diagnosed with IDD ( intellectual disability disorder )
How is a behaviour considered deviation from social norms?
when a person’s behaviour does not fit the rules of expected behaviour. Norms regulate the expectations of how people behave. - varies between cultures and generations ( dynamic )
Eg. homosexuality
What is an example of deviation from social norms?
Antisocial personality disorder - according to DSM - 5 one key symptom is absence of prosocial internal behaviour. - psychotic behaviour would be considered abnormal in many cultures
What is the definition of failure to function adequately?
inability able to cope with demands in everyday life.
What are some features that appear in abnormal behaviour when someone is unable to function adequately?
1) Loss of control
2) Irrationality
3) Personal distress
What is an examples of an individual not being able to function adequately?
IDD
What is the definition of deviation from ideal mental health?
if someone deviates from what is considered healthy and from ideal mental health based on Johada’s 6 features of ideal mental health.
The 6 features of Johada’s ideal mental health criteria:
1) no symptoms or distress
2) rational and good self perception
3) ability to self - actualise ( strive to reach for potential )
4) cope with stress
5) independent of. other people
6) successfully work, love and enjoy leisure
What is a strength of using statical infrequency as a measurement of abnormality
+ real world application and usefulness
-used in clinical practice as part of formal diagnosis and way to assess severity
-a diagnosis
