deviation from social norms

A

if a behavior goes against social norms can be viewed as abnormal. someone who performs undesirable behaviour may be labelled socially deviant.
social norms depend on time and culture:
homosexuality was deemed as abnormal in uk until recently
women who spoke out and assertive were trialled as witches.
some cultures still view behaviour deemed normal in uk as abnormal
homosexuality is seen as taboo in some country’s and not accepted
women being equal is seen as wrong in some countries

evaluation of deviation from social norms (strengths)

A
  • useful tool for assessing behaviour - someone who constantly performs in anti social manner could be deemed socially deviant
  • social norms are placed to make sure society’s are harmonious and run smoothly - identifying socially deviant behaviour is one way of protecting members of society from distressing acts
