What are the two decision making processes that run in parallel?
Fast Thinking (System 1) and Slow Thinking (System 2)
Fast Thinking (System 1)
Unconscious, automatic, low effort, rapid, holistic, perceptual, associative, context-specific, pragmatic, parallel, stereotypical, independent of intelligence
Slow Thinking (System 2)
Conscious, controlled, high effort, slow, analytic, reflective, rule-based, abstract, logical, sequential, egalitarian, linked to intelligence
What are some examples of fast thinking (System 1) tasks?
Detecting distance, orienting to sudden sound, completing phrases, making facial expressions, detecting hostility, driving on an empty road, reaching for a favorite brand, etc.
What are some examples of slow thinking (System 2) tasks?
Focusing attention, filling out complex forms, checking argument validity, looking for a particular brand, telling someone your phone number, etc.
Cognitive Biases
Mental shortcuts or patterns of thinking that can lead to irrational or biased decision-making
Stereotypical Bias
Relying on stereotypes instead of considering individuals
Confirmation Bias
Remembering information that confirms existing beliefs
Post-Purchase Rationalization
Emotionally driven purchases justified with logic
Authority Bias
Tendency to obey someone in authority
