If you could address one psychological issue affecting the Filipino youth today,
what would it be and how would you approach it?
A psychological issue that I would want to address is the issue of academic stress or ‘burnout’. it usually stems from familial expectations and societal consensus that educational attainment is equated to success. Thank God that type of culture didn’t exist in my family. We weren’t compared or forced to compete with other kids in regards to our grades. I would approach it with good time management and efficient learning strategies.
In a rapidly changing world, how can Psychology help individuals maintain their sense of identity and purpose?
One thing that I believe most people would agree on that may distort their sense of identity and purpose is the presence of STRESS. While there is a good type of stress, I want to talk about distress. I believe that distress is one of the main factors that make people forget their personal purpose and identity. Sometimes the feeling of being distressed overpowers the feeling/reason why you are the way you are and why you choose to keep on living. SO, where does psychology come in noh? It teaches us how we can lessen the effects of distress through relaxation techniques, the concept of mindfulness, and self-reflection.
How would you encourage fellow students to prioritize mental health, especially given the demands of academic life?
I would encourage my fellow students to prioritize mental health by advocating for self-compassion and fighting that all-nighter mentality. Oh my god, i don’t like it when people sometimes think that pulling off all-nighters is some sort of badge of honor that indicates they are good students when there are students who have good time management and manage to achieve the same grades as them. It really confuses me why they do that when an inadequate amount of sleep often has negative effects on your mind and body.
What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about mental health, and how can it be addressed?
The biggest misconception that some people have about mental health issues until now is that it’s all ‘make believe’ or ‘oa’ lng yan. I have a friend who had a severe case of OCD, they used to shower for at least 4 hours just so that they knew that they were really clean and had different unique rituals that he did without any social awareness. It made me feel bad when he talked about how his dad still didn’t understand that he hadn’t just oa even though he was already clinically diagnosed with OCD. One way to address this is to organize and tailor public mental health campaigns for people in every age with supported statistics and information that allows them to easily understand the importance of mental health.
In your opinion, what is the most important skill or quality a psychology student
must have?
I believe that the most important skill a psychology student must have is listening skills. We just recently tackled this in TOP noh, our teacher noticed that during oral recitations, at the start of our class almost all of us were quiet noh then after a lot of people have answered na kay medyo noisy na kahit oral recitiation pa then she told us na how are we supposed to be good psychologists daw if we cant even try to listen to the interesting things our classmates were talking about na admittedly ka boring naman daw paminsan making sa ibang tao.
Do you think advocating and promoting mental well-being on social media is important? Why or why not?
yeah, I do think that it is important to advocate for mental well-being on social media. It reduces the stigma around certain mental health issues and normalizes conversations that have mental well-being at its center. it can also link people with information and resources or help that they may not have known about if not for social media. However, thru social media, the risk of desensitization and glorification of mental illnesses also increases. Repeated exposure to media or stimuli talking about mental issues may encourage people to embrace their mental health conditions rather than address them.
What role does Psychology play in promoting empathy and fostering healthy
relationships among peers?
Conflict is part of every relationship. There will always be some sort of disagreement and when that time comes, effective techniques that have been provided by psychology will help people understand their peers better and help their relationship become closer and enjoyable now that they better understand each other.
Why do you think mental health awareness is important in combating the stigma surrounding mental health in today’s society?
