Psychology of Gender Flashcards
Feminism
Favors equality politically, economically, and socially between men and women. Favors legal and social change to achieve equality.
Helping behavior
Men are more likely than women to participate in helping behaviors (in terms of bystander intervention). Women are more likely to participate in helping behaviors involved in interpersonal relationships.
Aggression
There is a greater frequency of aggressive behavior by men due to existing cultural differences.
Decoding of nonverbal behavior
What we gather from someone’s nonverbal cues (facial expression, body language, tone). Women are better at this than men (learned behavior and evolutionary advantage).
Stereotype Threat
When the stereotype assigned to us impacts our behavior due to our fear of being perceived as exhibiting this stereotype (we feel like we have to either conform or go against the stereotype).
Stereotype
A general image of what the typical member of a category is like.
Personal Stereotypes
Individual perceptions or unique beliefs about characteristics of men and women.
Cultural Stereotypes
Image of a typical member from a group reinforced at the societal level, from sources like education, religion, media, etc.
