Nonverbal Communication Flashcards
Nonverbal Leakage
The tendency for true emotions to “leak out” inadvertently.
Content Filtered Speech
Words are muffled; can’t determine content but can still decipher emotions.
Random Spliced Speech
Speech cut into small segments, shuffled and mixed; one can understand basic meaning but does not convey emotion.
Paralanguage
What’s involved in speech when content is removed; like pitch, rhythm, hesitation, pauses. The second channel of nonverbal communication.
Territoriality
When we claim a space as our own.
Personal space
Physical space/zone that surrounds a person. Varies on who we’re with and what activity.
Proxemics
The ways people use space; includes personal space and territoriality. Part of the visible channel of nonverbal communication.
Visible Channel
Includes nonverbal communication that we can see, like facial expressions, gestures, and posture.
Nonverbal Communication
The ways we exchange information without using words; plays an important role in conveying emotions and information. Includes the visible and paralinguistic channel (involves in speech once you remove the content)
