Self-preoccupation – being overwhelmed with own personal problems and unable to focus on caring/giving to others.

Some type of early advantage in life (felt special in some way)
Feeling empathy for those who suffer
Have moral clarity that developed early in life (teen years)
Conflict between power (agency-pursuing own goals) and love (communion-giving to others)
Confident in leaving a legacy of growth

Childhoods characterized by psychological and/or physical injury/trauma
Repeated patterns of abusive relationships
Things do not turn out as expected; they take a turn for the worse
Failures and betrayals in personal relationships or work environments
Stories emphasize “contamination sequences” (positive followed by negative)
Do not think a lot about contributing to future generations but focus on getting by in the present – “Live for the moment.”
May suffer depression, substance abuse, etc.

the stories that give a life a sense of unity, meaning, and purpose. This is known as Narrative identity. This is the part that relates to Erikson’s theory of generativity
Redemptive self
Ways of thinking that saves one from stagnation, loneliness, a sense of failure
Thinking that suffering, which is part of every life, will give way to positive outcomes
Themes of Redemptive self
Sometimes the suffering a person experience is so overwhelming that it becomes part of their Characteristic adaptations; It colors their desires, beliefs, concerns, and coping mechanisms. It is a theme throughout their life story.
Making sense out of suffering isn’t always possible
Sometimes the best thing we can say to someone is, “I’m sorry that happened to you.” “I’m sorry you are going through this.”
