What is a crisis?
It is defined as an event or situation that is experienced as overhwelmiong and exceeds the resources and coping abilities of the individual or individuals
What are the characteristics of a crisis?
A crisis can be:
- Embodies both danger and opportunity for the person experiencing the crisis
- Usually Timelimiting or but it may present with recurring crises
- Complex
- No quick fixes
- It can cause desequilibrium or disorganization
What is psychological trauma?
It is damage to the mind where emotional, physical or mental distress is experienced
What is the 6 stage model of crisis intervention?
Step 1: define the problem(ask open ended questions and be empathetic and genuine)
Step 2: ensuring client safety(do suicide and homicide risk assessment)
Step 3: providing support(provide food and shelter if needed)
Step 4: examining the alternatives
Step 5: making plans
Step 6: obtaining commitment
What should we do in step 1?
Be empathetic and genuine and ask open-ended questions
-Ask exactly why the patient is there
What should we do in step 2?
Ensure the patients safety by doing a suicide and homicide risk assessment ‘
-removing lethal resources that would aid in suicide is also important
What do we do in step 3?
Provide support by telling the patient that they are of value and that we care about them
- providing the patient with food and shelter if they need it is important
- provide the patient with information
What do we do in step 4?
We encourage the patient to explore the alternative options to dealing with the crisis
3 categories of potential alternatives:
3.1 situational support
3.2 coping mechanisms
3.3 positive and constructive thinking patterns
What do we do in step 5?
Making plans by focusing on concrete steps that will help restore control
- social services, couples therapy, physiotherapy
- make them feel empowered
What do we do in step 6?
Obtaining commitment
- should be easy to get commitment because rapport has been established
- you can draw up a contract with the patient
