Psychology as a Science Flashcards
cause and effect
aims to demonstrate a causal relationship by manipulating the IV so the effect on the DV can be measured
falsification
ability to demonstrate a hypothesis can be proved false
replicability
- ability to replicate a procedure in the exact same way
- if a result is valid, it should be able to be obtained if the study is repeated
objectivity
taking an unbiased, external perspective and not be affected by a personal or individual viewpoint
induction
using observation to generate a testable hypothesis which can then be developed into theories
deduction
develops hypothesis from theories then tests the hypothesis to see if it is true
hypothesis testing
testing a hypothesis through empirical research
manipulation of variables
manipulation of the IV to see the variation in the results depending on whether it is present or not
control of variables
extent that variables are held constant and regulated
standardisation
all procedures are the same for each participant so results can be compared
quantifiable measures
recording behaviours in numbers for analysis
