BPS code of ethics
moral code researchers must follow to protect both participants and the experimenters
RESPECT
informed consent
- participant must give explicit consent to take part
right to withdraw
- participants should be able to withdraw at any time
confidentiality
- personal details/private results gained should be kept anonymous unless they consent to otherwise
COMPETENCE
researchers work within their own capabilities and are qualified to do so
RESPONSIBILITY
protection against physical/psychological harm
- experiment must not damage the participant or cause long term changes
debrief
- after an experiment where the aim was unclear, researchers must tell the participants the actual aims
INTEGRITY
deception
- participants must not be lied to or deceived for no reason
