Othello
a tragedy by William Shakespeare that tells the story of a Moorish general in the Venetian army, Othello, who is manipulated by his jealous and deceitful ensign, Iago, into believing that his wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful to him. As a result of Iago’s machinations, Othello becomes consumed by jealousy and eventually murders Desdemona. When the truth about Iago’s lies is revealed, Othello realizes his tragic mistake and takes his own life.
Othello syndrome
a rare psychological condition, in which an individual suspects his partner of infidelity, despite it being only an illusion.
