Psychology Flashcards
Psychology
-the scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Behavior
-observable actions
Mental processes
-thoughts, feelings, & motivations; cannot be observed
Thinking like a psychologist
- skeptical about assumptions, theories, facts, and evidence
- thinking objectively
- be curious
- looking at data before making assumptions/conclusions
- accepting debate, controversy, and an ever-changing field
Scientific Method
1) Observing some phenomenon
2) Formulating hypotheses and predictions
3) Testing through empirical research
4) Drawing conclusions
5) Evaluating the theory
Observing Some Phenomenon
-variables
Variables
-anything that can change
Theory
-broad idea/set of related ideas that attempts to explain observations
Hypothesis
-an educated guess that comes from a theory; a prediction that can be tested
Testing Through Empirical Research
-collecting and analyzing data to test your predictions
Operational definition
-an objective description of how a variable will be measured & observed
Drawing Conclusions
-data is analyzed through various statistical programs to allow scientists to draw conclusions
Evaluating the Theory
-Replication is important (test, conclude, evaluate)
