What is CBT ?
Short term problem focused psychosocial intervention - talking therapies

How is CBT delivered ?
There can be individual sessions with a therapist or group ones.
Goals and tasks for the therapy are set
What is psychoanalysis ?
Psychoanalysis deals with the investigation of the mind, a systematised body of knowledge about human behaviour and a method of treatment of psychological or emotional illness.
What is psychodynamic psychotherapy ?
A term that encompasses therapy of an analytical nature that focuses on the unconscious and past experiences to determine current behaviour.
How happens in psychodynamic psychotherapy ?
The patient is encouraged to talk about childhood relationships with parents and others in an attempt to alleviate psychic tension
What are the differences between psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy ?
Psychodynamic therapy is less intensive and briefer and relies on the interpersonal relationship between the therapist and patient
What is discussed in psychodynamic psychotherapy ?
What’s happening in their life at the moment
What’s happened in the past
How can the past can affect how you are feeling, thinking and behaving right now
What is psychotherapy ?
The systematic use of a relationship between a patient and a therapist - as opposed to physical and social methods - to produce changes in feelings, cognition and behaviour
How frequent is psychodynamic psychotherapy ?
Once or twice weekly session lasting about 50 minutes for a varied length of time ( 4 months to a year to longer )
What occurs during CBT ?
Directly addresses the role of dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs in producing and maintaining undesirable emotional states and behaviours.
Involves some form of exposure to reduce avoidance and permit habituation.
What is interpersonal therapy ?
It uses the link between the onset of depressive symptoms and current interpersonal problems as a focus for treatment. It focuses on addressing current relationships.
When is interpersonal therapy used ?
Depression
Eating disorders
What are family / systemic therapies ?
This doesn’t focus on symptoms or insight for treatment intervention but instead focuses on this system that generated the problematic behaviour.
This is commonly used in the family unit where the patient has been apart of a unit that is malfunctioning.
When is family therapy used ?
Commonly for children
Eating disorders
Adjunctive treatment in schizophrenia
