Psychological Therapy Flashcards
What is CBT’s role?
Makes sense of irrational thoughts/ cognitions and impact on behaviour.
Understanding where symptoms come from can be Hugely helpful.
Give an example of something CBT can make sense of
Being afraid hearing voices as believe it is demonic when it actually comes from malfunctions in speech area of brain.
Does CBT eliminate symptoms?
No, but it does allow people to cope
What is normalisation?
Tell client hearing voices is an extension of normal experience. Delusions can be challenged (if CBT doesn’t work it can be used to tackle anxiety)
Explain Turkington et al’s case study
Used CBT to explain to a client that the ‘mafia’ are not actually deciding how to kill you. By challenging ideas.
One strength of CBT is evidence for effectiveness (AO3)
Javhar et al: reviewed 34 studies of CBT concluding significant effects on positive and negative symptoms.
Pontillo et al: found reduction in frequency in frequency and severity of auditory hallucinations.
NICE (national institute for health and care experts) recommend CBT for schizophrenia
One limitation of CBT is the quality of evidence (AO3)
CBT techniques vary widely, so does schizophrenia symptoms
Thomas: points out different CBT techniques and people with different combinations of positive and negative symptoms. Makes it hard to say how effective CBT is for a particular person.
What is the aim of family therapy?
Aims to improve quality of communication and interaction. Links to double bind and schizophrenicgenic mother.
How does family therapy work?
Pharoah et al: reduce negative emotions (EE) to reduce stress.
Improve family ability to help- encourage family to form a therapeutic alliance where they agree on aims of therapy. Create a balance of caring for the individual and themselves
Briefly describe phases 1-7 of Burbach’s model for families
1- emotional and practical support
2- resources of what family members can offer
3- encourage understanding and safe space to share emotions
4- identify unhelpful patterns of interaction
5- skill training eg. Stress management
6- look at relapse prevention
7- maintenance for future
One strength of family therapy is evidence for effectiveness (AO3)
McFanane: concluded FT one of most effective treatments for schizophrenia.
Relapse rates reduces 50-60%
Using FT as mental health initially starts to decline is promising
NICE recommends FT for schizophrenia
FT benefit people
Another strength of FT is the benefits to a whole family (AO3)
Cobban and Barrowdough: concluded effectiveness as a family provide bulk care for people with schizophrenia.
Strengthening functioning of a whole family to support person with it. Wider benefits.
