What is meant by diathesis stress model?
Diathesis= vulnerability
Stress= negative experiences
Stress and trigger needed to develop a disorder. Onset of a disorder triggered by stress.

Totally genetic (schizogene) led to idea of biologically based schizotypic personality. Said if person does not have gene no amount of stress could lead to schizophrenia. If gene present then childhood adolescence stress can lead to schizophrenia.
Particularly schizophrenicgenic mother.
Modern understanding of diathesis
Modern explanation involves anything that triggers schizophrenia
Houston et al: cannabis can increase risk 7x according to doase, as cannabis interferes with dopamine system. Although most people who smoke cannabis do not develop schizophrenia as they lack vulnerability factors.
Treatment according to interactionalist approach
Must include both biological and psychological
CBT + DRUGS
Turkington et al: believe biology causes schizophrenia and still practice CBT to relieve psychological symptoms. This requires an interactionalist approach.
In UK common to take drugs and CBT, in USA more conflict as slower adoption of interactionalist approach
Support for vulnerability and triggers (AO3)
Tierari et al: large scale study investigating impact of genetic vulnerability and psychological trigger. Followed 19000 Finnish children whom mother had schizophrenia. Control group= adoptees and biological mum did not have schizophrenia. Assessed parenting.
Found high critisism, hostility and low levels of empathy associated with high schizophrenia (only in genetic)
Diathesis and stress are complex (AO3)
Model is over simplistic
Model presented as diathesis is a single schizo genre and stress as parenting style. However schizophrenia is poly genetic and stress not limited to parenting style.
Multiple different factors, biological, psychological, affecting diathesis and stress.

Studies show combining treatments enhance effectiveness.
