Psychological Therapies - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy psychosis Flashcards
What is the aim of CBTp?
To help patients identify dysfunctional thoughts and reality testing them to reduce distress.
How many sessions are required?
Usually 5-20, with NICE recommending at least 16.
What is the first stage of CBTp?
Recognise examples of dysfunctional or delusional thinking.
What is the second stage of CBTp?
Educating the patient on where delusions and hallucinations come from, reducing anxiety.
What is the third stage of CBTp?
Normalising having disrupted thoughts - there is no need to feel stressed or ashamed.
What is the fourth stage of CBTp?
Reality testing - therapist will attempt to disprove delusions.
What is the evaluation - Juahar?
Juahar reviewed 34 studies where CBT was used with Sz and concluded there is clear evidence for small but significant effects on both positive and negative symptoms.
What is the evaluation - Pontillo?
Pontillo found that CBT caused reductions in the frequency and severity of auditory hallucinations. Clinical advice from NICE also recommends CBT for Sz.
What is the evaluation - Thomas.
A limitation is the wide range of techniques used in the treatment. Thomas points out different CBT studies have used different CBT techniques and have people with different symptoms, making it difficult to generalise.
What is the evaluation - Palliative?
CBT is palliative and not curative. It teaches the patient to cope with the disorder but does not cure it as Sz is thought to be biological in origin, therefore psychological therapies may only help them to live a normal life.
