Psychological Therapies A01 Flashcards
What type of therapy is used for Sz?
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
CBTp (P stands for psychosis)
What is CBTp used for?
To help patients identify dysfunctional thoughts and reality testing them to reduce stress
How many CBTp sessions does a patient need?
5-20 with NICE recommending at least 16 sessions
What is the process of CBT?
R = Recognising - taught to recognise dysfunctional or delusional thinking, receive help on how to avoid acting on these thoughts
E = Educating - explaining where these delusions and hallucinations come from E.g malfunctioning brain areas = stops patient believing the voices can hurt them, which reduces anxiety
N = Normalising - help the patient realise it is normal to have disrupted thoughts in certain situations, explain that voice is an extension of the ordinary experience of thinking in words. Therefore, there is no need to feel stressed or ashamed about them
T (reality) = Testing - the patient and therapist test whether the belief is actually true E.g if the patient believes “the government are out to kill me” the therapist will ask for proof and disprove it
What are the aims of family therapies?
Improve the quality of communication and interaction between family members
What are the stages Fiona Pharaoh (2010) identified in improving the functioning of a family member with Sz?
- Reducing negative emotions = reduce rates of high expressed emotion which creates stress, reduced stress = reduced chance/likelyhood of relapse
- Improves families ability to help = encourages family to agree on the aims of therapy and behaviour towards Sz
Further aim is to ensure family members achieve a balance between caring for individual with Sz and maintaining their own lives
