Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Behavioural Activation
Interpersonal Therapy
Motivational Interviewing
What is the main ideas behind CBT?
Investigating how our thoughts, feelings and behaviour all relate to each other
What does the therapist do during CBT?
They help the patient identify their process of thoughts impacting their feelings and behaviour
Help patience realise thoughts are not facts, identify the unhelpful thoughts and help to change them
What is the patient’s main task during CBT?
They do “homework” that involves challenging the bad thoughts through graded exposure and response prevention
Describe behavioural activation
Promoting activities to tackle underlying problems & stop the patient doing activities that avoid the problem
e.g. avoiding friends, sleeping a lot and comfort eating because of anxiety
What is interpersonal therapy (IPT)?
Therapy that identifies an interpersonal event linked to the patient’s depressive symptoms
Then therapy to help improve interpersonal functioning to reduce depressive symptoms
What is motivational interviewing?
A technique where the therapist guides the patient to find motivation for a behaviour change.
Patient must set their own agenda and come up with their own ideas as its about building their own motivation. If therapist made up his own plan would not work as not tailored to individual
