Cognitive behavioural therapy
Usually takes place between 5 and 20 sessions
The aim is to help patients identify irrational thoughts and change them
This does not get rid of symptoms but helps patients more easy to cope with them

Aims to improve the quality of interaction and communication in families.

Token economies
Tokens are given to patients when they perform socially desireable behaviour. Tokens can be swapped for rewards such as sweets. This is operant conditioning

Reviewed results of 34 CBT and found it had a significant but fairly small impact of pos and neg symptoms

Reviewed effectiveness of family therapy and found evidence that it reduces hospital re admission and improves quality of life of patients
Treatments improve quality of life but do not sure
CBT helps patients make sense of condition
Family therapy reduces stress
Token economies make behaviour more socially acceptable
They do not however cure they just reduce severity of symptoms
Ethical issues
Token economies are controversial with the idea that those who receive privileges are less severe patients
This means the most Ill patients are discriminated against
Quality of evidence of effectiveness
Small studies have shown psychological treatments do help however in these small studies there is often no control group to compare with
