Psychological research and the economy Flashcards
How much (estimated) does sickness absence due to mental health cost the UK?
It is estimated that sickness absence due to ill mental health costs around £8 billion per yer
How does attachment research into the role of the father have an impact on the economy?
Psychologists research has shown that both parents are equally capable of providing emotional support.
It is now the norm in lots of households that the mother is the higher earner so work longer hours, so share childcare responsibilities
Paternity leave arguably should be increased to allow for longer time to bond with the father
This could negatively affect the economy as paternity leave pay would have to paid and cover would also have to be paid to fill their position.
How can research into mental illness impact the economy?
The development of effective treatments for the most common types of mental health conditions, use psychotherapeutic drugs such as SSRI’s (anti-depressants) CBT and other psychology treatments.
This positively affects the economy as it allows people to manage their own condition and return to education/employment.
How has minority influence/social change research had an impact on the economy?
Research into the processes involved in social change demonstrates how minority influence, conformity and obedience can effect change in attitudes, thinking and behaviour.
For example, the suffragettes campaigned for women’s rights which lead to equal rights in the workplace (more jobs available).
What are other recent examples of how minority influence/ social change research has had an impact on the economy?
- The move towards a more environmentally friendly greener approach
- and the introduction of the smoking ban.
Both of these contribute greatly to the economy as recycling leads to reduced manufacturing and a reduction in the number of people smoking saves the NHS millions.
