psychological problems Flashcards
Describe two characteristics of mental health
They have effective ways to cope with challenges
They are positively engaged with society
Explain (with an example) what is meant by cultural variations in beliefs about mental health
•Culture is shaped by social norms
•Norms can change over time
•In our culture, hearing voices is considered a symptom of a mental heath problem
•Other cultures might see it as a good thing because it means you can communicate with god/spirits
•Time affects social norms- our culture used to think being gay was mental illness but in modern society thats not true.
Explain why modern living may involve increased challenge
•Modern living might be more difficult for multiple reasons
•Pressure- more pressure to achieve at school and work and there are less jobs for people with no qualifications
•Isolation- older people/people living in cities. More live longer and move away from home- increasingly isolated/no network of friends
•Technology- Some people think the internet/technology have a negative affect on our mental health. There isn’t enough evidence yet to know if thats true.
