Psychological Explanations: Psychodynamic Flashcards
When is the superego formed?
At the end of the phallic stage of development when children resolve the Oedipus complex.
What does the superego work on?
Works on the morality principle and exerts its influence by punishing the Ego through guilt and wrongdoing, whilst rewarding it with pride for good moral behaviour.
What determines a WEAK superego?
If the same-gender parent is absent during the phallic stage, a child cannot internalise a fully-formed superego as there is no opportunity for identification.
What does a weak superego make more likely to happen?
The child would make immoral or offending behaviour.
What determines a DEVIANT superego?
If the superego that a child internalises has immoral or deviant values (growing up with a criminal parent/ environment)
What does a deviant superego lead to?
Offending behaviour.
What determines an OVER-HARSH superego?
An excessively punitive or overly harsh parenting style leads to a child with an over-harsh superego who is crippled by guilt and anxiety.
What does an over-harsh superego (subconsciously) drive?
The individual to person criminal acts in order to satisfy the superegos overwhelming need for punishment.
What are the effects of an inadequate superego?
To allow primitive, emotional demands to become uppermost in guiding moral behaviour.

What are maternally deprived individuals likely to engage in?
Acts of delinquency and cannot develop close relationships with others.
