What is anger management?
A therapeutic programme that involves identifying the signs that trigger anger as well as learning techniques to calm down and deal with the situation in a positive way.
What does Novaco suggest about CBT?
Suggested that cognitive factors trigger the emotional arousal high generally precedes aggressive acts.
How is anger management a form of CBT?
The individual is taught how to recognise the cognitive factors that trigger their anger and loss of control, and then encouraged to develop techniques which bring about conflict resolution without the need for violence.
What are the 3 stages of anger management?

-skills aquisition
-application practice
What is cognitive preparation?
Requires an offender to reflect on past experiences and consider the typical pattern of their anger.
What is skills acquisition?
Offenders are introduced to a range of techniques and skills to help them deal with anger- provoking situations more rationally and effectively.
What is an example of a cognitive technique? (anger management)
Positive self talk to encourage calmness.
What is an example of a behavioural techniques? (anger management)
Assertiveness training in how to communicate more effectively which will become an automatic response if practices regularly.
What is an example of a physiological technique? (anger management)
Deal with the physical reaction to anger such as usually relaxation training/ meditation.
What is application practice?
Offenders are given the opportunity to practice their skills within a carefully controlled environment.

What was Keen’s (2000) study which lead to a positive outcome with young offenders? (anger management)
-Studies the progress made with young offenders aged between 17-21.
-Course consisted of 8 two-hour sessions, the first 7 over a 3 week period and the last a month after.
-the final outcomes were generally positive (some didn’t take it seriously).
-offenders reported increased awareness of their anger management difficulties and an increased capacity to exercise self-control.
