Psychological explanations for schizophrenia Flashcards
What are the two psychological explanations for schizophrenia
- Family dysfunction
- Cognitive explanations
Which researcher proposed the schizophrenogenic mother? And what approach does it consider?
Freida-Fromm Reichmann
What does the schizophrenic mother suggests? What is the result
Suggests that those who may have grown up with a cold, controlling and rejecting mother were at more risk of developing the disorder.
As a result a climate of tense and secrecy was created which causes the person at risk to become distrustful = paranoid delusions
What is the double blind theory for schizo?
Receiving conflicting messages from family members act as risk factors for schizo. Developing children fear doing wrong, but bc they receive mixed messages from parents = wrong
This results in a withdrawal of love = view the world as confusing and dangerous.
Who proposed the DBT for schizophrenia?
Bateson et al
What is the result of the DBT for schizophrenia?
Paranoid & disorganised thinking
How is expressed emotion an explanation of developing schizophrenia
Negative emotions expressed by family e..g verbal criticism, and hostility is a source of stress and can cause a relapse and a cause of onset for Schizophrenia
Who is the main researcher for the cognitive explanation of schizophrenia
Frith et al
What does the cognitive explanation of schizophrenia suggest?
A disruption to thought processing e.g. reduced thought processing in ventral striatum, is a risk factors in developing. More specifically, two kinds of dysfunctional thought processes have been identifies to explain schizo
What are the two dysfunctions proposed by the Firth et al for schizophrenia?
- Metarepresentation dysfunction
- Central control dysfunction
What is metarepresentation and how does dysfunction cause schizophrenic symptoms?
This is the ability to reflect on thoughts and behaviour. Those with schizo fail to metarepresent and therefore show symptoms of hallucinations and delusions
What is central control dysfunction and does it lead to schizophrenic symptoms?
This it the ability to suppress responses whilst performing actions. They suffer a derailment of thoughts due to word triggers which cause associations that they are unable to suppress. Symptoms that derive from this are speech poverty and thought disorder
