What is Schizophrenia?
A mental illness characterised by a loss of contact w reality, a type of psychosis with common symptoms of hallucinations, paranoia and hallucinations
Characteristics of schizo?
1% of population, yes, males, urban areas
What are the two manuals used for diagnosis of schizo?
DSM-V, & ICD-10
Why are there subtypes of schizo, Example?
Bc of inconsistencies of symptoms
e.g. Paranoid = powerful delusions & hallucinations
How many symptoms need to be present for positive or negative symptoms for the diagnostic manuals?
ICD-10 = 2 or more negative symptoms
DSM-V = 1 positive symptom
What are positive symptoms of schizophrenia
Symptoms in addition to normal experiences
e.g. Hallucinations & delusions, speech disorganisation
What are negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Symptoms that cause the loss of a normal function
e.g. Avolition, Speech poverty
What is reliability?
The consistency In which psychiatrist agree on the same diagnosis when independently assessing
What is validity?
Whether we assess what we want to assess, how accurate the diagnosis for schizo is
What is the definition of hallucination?
Distorted perceptions of reality e.g hearing voices
What is delusions?
Beliefs that conflict w reality e.g. thinking they Jesus w a mission
What is speech poverty?
the reduciton in quality and the amount of speech
e.g. one word answer without elaboration
What is avolition? Example?
The loss of motivation to cope w everyday activities = lack of results
Andersen = 3 signs
e.g. poor hygiene, lack of energy, lack of persistence in work/ education
