Abnormal processes within a family such as conflict, communication problems, cold parenting, criticism, control and high levels of expressed emotions

- the double bind theory
- suggests that children who frequently receive contradictory messages from their parents are more likely to develop schizophrenia
- believed that sz was as a result of social pressures from life

A
parents expressing their love whilst apparelling cold and angry

What did Fromm Reichmann propose?
A
- schizophrenic mother who is cold, rejecting and controlling and tends to create a family that is tense and secretive
- this leads to distrust which leads to paranoid delusions

What is expressed emotion?
A
- negative emotions expressed by carers to the patient

What are expressed emotion examples?
A
- verbal criticism of the patient, might be with violence
- hostility to the patient e.g. anger and rejection
- emotional over-involvement in the life of the patient

A
- a relapse
- the stress may trigger sz in patients who are vulnerable
