Aim
Depression patients will be happier if they take Botox in their frown lines as it interrupts the negative emotion feedback, so negative emotions will not be felt so strongly/long
Study 1 and Results
- Naturalistic study
- 12 people had Botox for frown lines
- Compared to 13 people who had Botox in other areas
- Did questionnaire for mood
Results:
- Those who had forehead Botox had less irritability, depression, anxiety
- Are happier
Limitations of Study 1:
- Correlational Study
- No prior test
- Small scale study
Second Study and Results
- Rated pleasantness ratings for odour (urine/fish)
- Asked to either wrinkle nose or not
Results:
- Wrinkling = lower rating if pleasantness
Limitations of second study
- No pre-test
- DC as Ppts were told to wrinkle face/not
Positives
- Naturalistic study
- Test retest on second study to improve reliability
- No demand characteristics due to double blind
- Depression detecting questionnaires are reliability
How to better the design?
- Other emotions being investigated e.g anger
Third Study with Results
- Are there negative effects of Botox?
- Test/Retest with 36 ppt with cosmetic treatment
- 24 had Botox
- Asked 3 questions: 2 on social interaction and 1 on happiness
- Naturalistic study
- Also measured empathy and emotion reading
Result:
- Adv of frown lines decreases when you get smile lines done too
- Worse empathy/emotion reading as mimicking is not possible
- Women have lower orgasm levels if they have Botox
