Generalized Anxiety Disorder
anxiety disorder
feels tense/anxious much of the time about many issues
does not experience panic attacks
symptoms: restlessness, poor concentration, muscle tension, irritability
Specific Phobia
anxiety disorder
persistent, strong, and unreasonable fear of a certain object/situation
situational - flying, elevators
natural environment - water, lightning
blood-injection-injury - injections, blood, medical procedures
Animal - spiders, snakes, dogs
Social Phobia
unreasonable, paralyzing fear of feeling embarrassed or humiliated while one is watched by others, even while performing routine activities
Panic Disorder
anxiety disorder
debilitating anxiety and fear arise frequently and without reasonable cause
fear more panic attacks
Symptoms - suffered at least 1 panic attack
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
anxiety disorder
arises when person feels intense fear, horror, or helplessness while experiencing, witnessing, or otherwise confronting extremely traumatic event (involves actual/threatened death/serious injury to self/others)
Symptoms: insomnia, angry outbursts, poor concentration, vigilance
*Symptoms present for more than 1 month
Acute Stress Disorder
anxiety disorder
same as PTSD
*Symptoms present for a month or less
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
anxiety disorder
characterized by obsessions, compulsions, or both
Obsession = repeated, intrusive, uncontrollable thoughts/impulses that cause stress or anxiety
Compulsion = repeated physical/mental behaviors that are done in response to an obsession or in accordance with a set of rules, in order to reduce distress or to prevent something dreaded from occurring
panic attack
occurs in panic disorder
experiences intense dread, along with shortness of breath, chest pain, a choking sensation, and cardiac symptoms (rapid heartbeat)
may also experience sweating, trembling, lightheaded, chills
Anxiety Disorder
emotional state of unpleasant physical & mental arousal
characterized by excessive worry, uneasiness, apprehension and fear
Somatoform Disorder
characterized primarily by physical symptoms and concerns, which may mimic physical disease
not explainable medically
DO NOT IMPROVE with medical treatment
Conversion Disorder
somatoform disorder
emotion/anxiety => physical symptom
change in sensory/motor function that has no discernible physical/psychological cause
significantly affected by psychological factors
causes significant distress/impairment
Pain disorder (chronic pain syndrome)
somatoform disorder
clinically important pain
significantly affected by psychological factors
causes significant distress/impairment
Somatization disorder
somatoform disorder
variety of physical symptoms over an extended period of time
had at least 8 physical symptoms by the age of 30 (not fully explained by by any physical/mental cause)
Physical Symptoms-
1. pain in at least 4 areas of the body
2. at least 2 gastrointestinal symptoms (not including pain)
3. at least 1 sexual symptom
4. at least 1 pseudoneurological symptom (poor balance, double vision)
cause significant impairment
Body Dismorphic Disorder
somatoform disorder
preoccupied w/slight physical anomaly/imagined defect in appearance
causes significant distress and impairment
Hypochondriasis
somatoform disorder
preoccupied with fears of having a serious illness for at least 6 months
fears based on misinterpretation of bodily symptoms
not relieved when investigation reveals no illness
