what questions do we ask when trying to understand disorders?
- What are your current symptoms or concerns?
- Have you ever been diagnosed with a mental health disorder before? If so, what was the diagnosis? etc
what are the mental health professions
psychiatrist, therapist, counselor, social worker etc
how is the medical model used in understanding psychological disorders?
the assumption that psychopathology is the result of one’s biology
what is the biophysical approach?
systematically considers biological, psychological, and social factors and their complex interactions in understanding health, illness, and health care delivery.
what DSM and how is it used?
DSM is a book full of psychological mental disorders, we use it by reading, to see symptoms etc
what is generalized anxiety disorder GAD?
persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things
what is panic attacks and panic disorder?
panic disorder:
Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder where you regularly have sudden attacks of panic or fear
panic attacks: a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause
what is phobias?
an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal.
what is social anxiety disorder?
an intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others.
what is obsessive-compulsive disorder? OCD
a long-lasting disorder in which a person experiences uncontrollable and recurring thoughts (obsessions), engages in repetitive behaviors (compulsions), or both.
what is PTSD?
a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it
what causes disorders ( anxiety )
conditioning, genes, brain, and observational learning
what is major depressive disorder?
MDD is a mental condition characterized by a persistently depressed mood and long-term loss of pleasure or interest in life, often with other symptoms such as disturbed sleep, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and suicidal thoughts
what is dysthymia?
is a milder, but long-lasting form of depression, also known as persistent depressive disorder.
what is bipolar disorder?
known as manic depression, a mental condition marked by alternating periods of elation and depression.
