What is CBT?
A form of therapy which relates our thoughts back to our feelings and behaviour via:
Focusing on here and now
Using problem focused or goal oriented
What is CBT beneficial for?
Depression, anxiety, phobias, OCD, PTSD
How does the therapist help the patient in CBT?
Helps identify thoughts, feelings and behaviours
Assess’ whether thoughts are unrealistic or unhelpful
Identifies what the patient can change
Can provide homework to grade patients improvement
What is behavioural action?
Therapy which encourages depressed patients to engage in activities that they had previously been avoiding
Allows analysis of cognitive processes that involve avoidance
What is IPT?
Interpersonal Therapy which aims to reduce depressive symptoms and improve interpersonal functioning
How does IPT work?
Contruct an interpersonal map to identify the interpersonal context and discuss how depressive symptoms are linked to interpersonal events
What are the strengths of IPT?
A grade evidence for treating depression
No formal homework
Client can continue to practise skills beyond session ending
What are the limitations of IPT?
Requiring degree of ability to reflect which may be difficult for some
Poor social networks = limited interpersonal support
What is motivational interviewing ?
Promotes behaviour changes in a wide range of health care settings by allowing patients to explore and resolve ambivalence
What are the principles of MI?
Express Empathy
Avoid Arguement
Support self-efficacy
