Sigmund Freud

Mind has 3 interacting parts; id, Ego, Superego
Children go through 5 stages of psychosexual development; oral, anal, phallic, latent, genital
Oral Stage
The libido is focused mainly on the mouth (sucking, swallowing etc)
Only the id is working at this point (0-18 months)
Oral receptive: optimistic, gullible, and dependent
Oral aggressive: aggressive, pessimistic, envious, and suspicious
Anal Stage
The libido is mainly focused on the anus (withholding & expelling faeces)
Development of the Ego ( 18months - 3years)
Potty training
Delayed gratification
Healthy development; the ability to deal with authority, to maintain a balance between being ordered and being able to tolerate mess
Phallic Stage
Libido is focused on the genitals (masturbation)
id and ego are fully formed (3-5 years)
Superego is created at the end of the phallic Stage by the resolution of the Oedipus or Electra complexes.
Latent Stage
Little / no sexual motivation
(5 years- puberty)
No fixations as no pleasure focus
Genital stage
The libido is focused on the genitals and heterosexual intercourse
(Puberty onwards)
Well developed adult personality & well adjusted (If the complexes during phallic stage are resolved)
