Key Terms Flashcards
Generalisability
Can we apply the findings of research to the general population
Reliability
Are the findings of research consistent ?
Is the research procedure consistent ?
Application
Are the findings of the research of any use to society, legal process, education or family etc ?
Have the results improved life ?
Ecological validity
If the research is conducted in an artificial environment or a situation that is un-natural then it lacks ecological validity
Internal validity
Wether the independent variable really has an effect on the dependent variable
Ethics
Is the study ok to do ?
Informed consent Right to withdraw Deception Confidentiality Debriefing Protection of participants
DV (dependent variable)
What is being measured in an experiment
IV (independent variable)
The different conditions in an experiment
Operationalise
Making the DV measurable
Hypothesis
A statement in psychology that we believe to be true
CV (confounding variables)
Controllable
We have to control CV, these could be something like the time of the day
EV (extraneous variable)
Uncontrollable
They effect the DV but not in a systematic way, could be that the participant had an argument just before going into the experiment- this might change the outcome of your results
