Unconscious mind
Energy is expressed in different ways and for different parts of the body. Freud bully personality developed through the sequence of the stages where sexual energy is focused on different parts of the body.
Conscious mind
The part that is inaccessible to conscious thought. Most of our everyday behaviours are controlled by this.
Freudian slips
The thoughts, feelings and perceptions that we are of.
Dreams
A verbal or memory mistake which is linked or influence by unconscious mind. May reveal what is going on in the unconscious.
Defence mechanisms
The window into the unconscious according to Freud.
Id
Used by the ego to prevent a person experiencing anxiety. These tend to operate unconsciously and work by the distorting reality.
Ego
Operates in the unconscious. Operates according to the pleasure principle, Adam as immediate gratification.
Superego
Mediates between the impulsive demands of the I’d,the reality of external world and the more realistic demands of the superego.
Repression
The conscious internalisation of societal rules.it determines which behaviours are right or wrong and causes feelings of guilt when rules are broken.
Denial
A type of defence mechanism. Unconscious blocking of thoughts and impulses.
Displacement
A type of defence mechanism. refusing to accept reality as to avoid having to deal with any painful feeling that might be associated with an event.
Psychosexual stages
A type of defence mechanism. involves the person redirecting of thoughts or feelings in situations where the person feels unable to express them in the presence of the person they should be directed towards. Instead they take it out on others.
